Tracking Late Assignments

Late work is difficult to manage at the middle and high school level because of the amount of students per class. This semester I am going to use Google Forms for two main reasons. First, it will make grading late work more efficient because it will all be stored in one place. Secondly, it will hold my students accountable by submitting a request for an extension. I will post a later blog once I roll it out. Stay tuned 🙂 Please comment down below if this works for you or if you have another option to share. Happy Tinkering!

What you need:

  • familiarity w/ Google Forms
  • familiarity w/ Google Sheets

Step 1

Fill out a Google Form with the information you want to gather from your students. I included email verification. You have to choices. Settings and click on Collect email addresses OR create an email address section using the short response option. I used the former, and it notifies them their emails are being collected.

New due date with calendar option.

Their reason for extension with the short answer option.

Step 2

Click on responses and then on the Google Sheets symbol to open it.

Step 3 Organize it by Class

You can organize the responses by class period. Simply highlight the entire sheet. Then, select data. Then, sort range. Select sort by Column C. Click sort.

Optional Splash of Color

If you want to add color to your spreadsheet, you can simply just highlight the entire sheet. Click format. Then, alternating colors. Choose your favorite and click done.

I'm an experienced high school English teacher sharing best practices to inform, to inspire and to reflect on my own craft. Love implementing new ideas and efficient systems that make teaching manageable. Teachers need a surmountable amount of support to help them survive, and every year comes with its own challenges. When I am not teaching or creating, I love hiking, running, anything outdoorsy! I am also a mother of two boys, one in college the other in his last year of middle school. Hope you can utilize what I create and share on this platform.
